The Green Mountain Spinnery

Located in Vermont, a morning's drive from the sheep in upstate New York, Green Mountain spins our Saxon Merino wool the way we want it spun.

The Card

It's marvelous that in this world of ever increasing homogenized options, Green Mountain can spin wool and ply or twist it into unique knitting yarns to our specifications, "thicker, thiner, more twist..."  Let the spinnery speak for itself:

Since our founding in 1981 our goals remain unchanged: to create yarns of the highest quality, to help sustain regional sheep farming, and to develop environmentally sound ways to process natural fibers.

From initial contact with the fiber grower through the final labeling and approval of each finished skein of yarn, our team attends with care to every step and detail in the yarn-making process.

As part of our commitment to small scale sheep and fiber producers, The Green Mountain Spinnery provides a custom processing service. We enjoy working with fiber producers to design yarn particular to their unique fleece and fiber considerations.

The spinning machinery that Green Mountain now uses was put into service in New England in the early 20th century but was abandoned by the ever globalizing spinning industry as it got larger and chased lower costs south to the Carolinas then off-shore to China where most of the yarn knit in America has been processed.
